Surreal Hats
Vickie Brunner
Surreal Wearables
A variety of wearable art in the form of surreal headgear has materialized. Each one-of-a-kind hat has been startlingly different from the previous incorporating faceted beads, feathers, fur and lights. Some have been featured in the Salvador Dali Museum Gallery entrance and Museum store. Some have been worn at Fantasy Fest in Key West, FL. and one design was recently featured on National television.
In 2009 my Get A Grip Hands Hat and a dragonfly craft project were featured on HGTV, That's Clever.

Surreal Wearables
Weavings and Fiber Sculptures
Producing since 1992, Vickie started as a 3-D cloth sculpture weaver. “I began weaving inside of shark jaws and later gravitated toward weaving inside of found objects and assemblages.” Working mostly off-loom Vickie usually focuses on ecological, surreal and feminist themes.
"I have long believed that I am taking my craft in a new direction as I have been frequenting art shows for years and have never seen anything like the works I produce". Projects are often freestanding items incorporating wood, wire, fabrics, yarn, plastics, seaweed and automotive parts.
In 2004 the focus shifted to fiber and mixed media. Since then a variety of wearable art in the form of surreal headgear has materialized.
In 2007/08 I began working in wire sculpture and paper mache over wire. A giant giraffe and stilt-legged space elephant led the 2008 Museum of Fine Arts Parade in downtown St. Petersburg, FL.
In 2009 my Get A Grip Hands Hat and a dragonfly craft project were featured on HGTV, That's Clever.
In 2010 my work was featured at Tampa International Airport as a teaser attraction for an on-site mini exhibition designed to increase Dali Museum visitation.
Quick, Easy, Educational Crafts
Interested in cost effective creation of themed crafts to compliment your exhibitions, please contact me. This concept can work for you too. This completely separate area of interest encompasses the creation of children’s educational arts and crafts. Economical projects are often made using recycled materials and designed so children can assemble them quickly and without much mess. Surprisingly, many of these projects appeal to teens and adults. They are easily adapted to related subjects and often feature aspects of reading, science and art history. These crafts have successfully attracted families with children to the museum where I work.
